Remake the negative air pressure structure to adapt urban life

Airless Backpack is an exploration of the possibilities of negative air pressure, just like wind energy can be harnessed only by containing the air under highly pressured environment, air can be used as a formative agent by storing compressed air in the form of potential energy. The main section in this project is the experiments of negative air pressure: pull, relocate and immobilize the stuff.

 

Project deflate combined air suction system with a backpack. For a dweller in the city, we can not avoid carrying something with us, the deflatable backpack obviously improved the performance and using experiments by negative air pressure. The built-in air pump can reduce the inner air pressure to relocate inner things tightly, and pull the barycenter closer to our back, making us more convenient in the crowded environment and keep better balance when we move with it.

Deflatables are still largely undiscovered when compared with inflate pneumatic constructions. Inflate structure can be wildly used due to the positive air pressure performance. The deflatable structure is used but only used in storage area and fashion areas. The deflate structure depends on outside material and inner structure/material, so the exploration of it is unpredictable.

 

On the other hand, as the carrier of deflate concept, backpack’s volume and shape is depending on what in it, that makes you more flexible in a crowded city. Also, with the strong push by negative air pressure, the inner things can not move with your walk and run, that makes running from work to home more comfortable.

To build the deflatable system in a backpack, I need to make an airtight room, air exhaustion and backpack strap. The material experiments including PVC, TPU, PU, and latex.  The TPU coated fabric is the final choice, which is waterproof, airtight and strong.   ultrasonic welding can make the best and tightest joint. Besides, the attempts of ultrasonic welding time and frequency are also needed.

 

 The raw prototypes aimed to test the bag’s shape and structure,  I made several ones with different sizes, gave these to my friends, let them use in daily lives. And the survey from Runner’s Need shop and backpack shop showed what details I need to do, such as the reflective stripe, waist strap and the position of barycenter.

 

I asked someone who is running between home and work, finding what they need to take, and an online survey is worth to do. The Inflate company gave me some suggestions, can I build inflatable and deflatable structure together?
